Nonsense at McHenry County Board

A Special Meeting of the McHenry County Board has been called for Friday morning, January 18, at 9:00AM in the regular meeting room on the second floor at 667 Ware Road. This is just northeast of the Government Center and east of Route 47.
Wait until you see the question that is proposed for the April 9th ballot! Ready?

SHALL THE CHAIRMAN OF THE MCHENRY COUNTY BOARD BE ELECTED AT-LARGE, BY THE VOTERS FOR A TERM OF FOUR YEARS AND NOT BE REQUIRED TO BE A MEMBER OF THE MCHENRY COUNTY BOARD?

YES or NO

Remember the question on the November 6, 2012, ballot about the County Executive? And how it was a two-part question? Who dreams up these things? Why do you ever present a two-part question for a vote? How do you vote, if your answer to one part is Yes and to the other part is No?

Read the proposed question again.

There are 24 Board members - four from each of six Districts in McHenry County. Who would vote for a Chairman who would not be one of them?

Think this whole thing is pretty stupid? You've got one day to call your County Board District representatives!

Don't email. Call. Call tonight or tomorrow - Thursday. You can find their phone numbers on the County website at co.mchenry.il.us

Under Quick Links on the homepage, click on County Board Members. Scroll down.

Care to toss in your 2¢ worth on Friday morning? Arrive in time to sign in and be ready to speak for three minutes. Even if another speaker has already used your words, address the County Board yourself.

A knowledgeable reader provided me with the following information.

The language in the proposed resolution is mandated by statute, according to the State's Attorney.

Considerable time was devoted to identifying ways around the two-part question and if there were other options.

The other option was considered even worse.

My thanks to that reader.

Hi Gus
Democracy at its best! I made about a dozen calls tonight to constituents in District 1. A small sample, yes, but I know how at least some feel about this. I'll be up until 11 if anyone wants to talk about this. Thanks for putting it out there and getting folks interested.
