Nygren contributes to Democrat

Press Release by Zane Seipler for Sheriff

Republican Sheriff Keith Nygren’s Support of the Democratic Party

Woodstock, IL, September 30, 2009- In the latter part of the 1970’s, Keith Nygren embarked on a political career. Record states that Mr. Nygren was a Democratic committeeman in Algonquin Township. At the age of 32, Keith Nygren was endorsed as the candidate for the appointment of sheriff by the McHenry County Democratic Central Committee. He did not get the appointment but his career as a politician began.

Keith Nygren was appointed Sheriff of McHenry County in 1997, this time as a Republican. Prior to 1997, Mr. Nygren never participated in Republican Party politics. According to recent record, Sheriff Nygren has not completely left his Democratic ideologies behind. At a time when the Republican Party struggles to rebuild, Sheriff Nygren gives financial aid to a local Democratic leader. Not just once but several times over the past couple of years. When the Republican Party is in need of cohesiveness, leadership and support, Sheriff Nygren openly undermines the party that appointed him to office. By providing campaign contributions to members of the Democratic Party, Keith Nygren turns his back on the Republican campaign donors that have helped solidify his tenure over the past 12 years.

Bi-partisan relationships are necessary in all aspects of government, including law enforcement. Financing the other team crosses the line. If Mr. Nygren has formed personal relationships with members of the opposing party, those relationships are to be respected. Party unity and loyalty should also be respected. Republican campaign contributions should not end up in Democratic coffers. County Republican leaders should not be attending breakfast fundraisers for any member of the Democratic Party.

I am asking Republican Sheriff Keith Nygren to publically withdraw his support for any and all Democrats running for office, or to resign from the Republican Party.

Zane Seipler
Republican Candidate for Sheriff

Hey Gus,

Any idea on whom or what issues that Mr. Seipler is alluding to in his statement?

I personally am a right-leaning Libertarian, so for the most part thus far, have found my home in the Republican Party. While I most firmly believe in and adhere to the “closed” party primary system in Illinois (and thus see Seipler’s point), outside of the primaries, I do vote for numerous candidates that are not Republican or Libertarian in the general elections. As far as I am concerned, the best candidate should win the General. If you’ve done a “stand-up” job in the last 2 or 4 years, you deserve re-election. As I’ve also stated previously, based upon your stories here, I no longer see Nygren as a viable candidate for the GOP.

IF – IF, what Seipler might be referring to is support by Nygren for Jack Franks (?), then he best be careful in his statements. The fact that he does not plainly state whom he is discussing leads me to believe that perhaps it is Franks.

While not in Franks’ district (I’m right next door), I have keenly followed his political career. He first came to my attention many years ago as a brash freshman Illinois Democrat legislator. His commentary regarding Bob Michel, the then-US House Republican leader and other Republican heavyweights of that era, informed me that any gentleman worth his salt, regardless of party affiliation, had to regard Franks as a major, blow-hard *sshole.

However, times change, as do people. In the ensuing years, Franks has moderated his tone and has polished his game. In viewing his service to constituents, as well as his voting record, one could reasonably make the case that he is a true Blue-Dog Democrat, and thus worthy of attention by someone of my political instincts and voting habits, and perhaps well-reflects the “majority” of political instinct resident in Franks’ District, as is demonstrated in vote totals for Mr. Franks in what should largely be a Republican stronghold.

IF – IF so, I would caution Seipler that he make sure that any such “talk” be adequately contained within Republican Party parameters should he wish to win the Primary, as well as in going on to win the General. I would also advise him that if he should wish to win, that he also make a concerted effort to sit down with Representative Franks and try to win him over to a mutually-beneficial political understanding of shared purpose, should there be any.

Franks has proven to be a pragmatist, and should his influence prove to be the subject of Seipler’s statement, and based upon the negative views of Nygren that this site has generated, Seipler needs to move forward in a most careful manner, should we wish to vanquish Nygren.
