If you liked using Virginia Road as a direct route to Route 31 and south, so as to avoid the Randall Road Speedway, be prepared for a two-month detour. Virginia Road was to close yesterday, September 8, between Rakow Road and Route 31 for two months to allow Waste Management to make road improvements.
According to the press release of the McHenry County Division of Transportation, Waste Management is to make roadway improvements on Virginia Road near its facility at Pingree Road and at the intersection of Route 31 and Virginia Road.
I guess it will be interesting to see just what they do to the roadway and how much additional WM traffic will use the roadway as justification for a two-month closing of a County road.
In the meantime, you'll probably want to avoid the area. This closure will throw more traffic on Pyott Road and Algonquin Road eastbound into Route 31 and causing longer back-ups in morning rush-hour. Southbound Route 31 traffic may remain about the same, as traffic from northwest of that area will just have to go east on Rakow Road and then south on 31(or east on U.S. 14 to southbound 31). Expect longer delays at the light at Rakow and Virginia Road, unless the County re-times the light.
