Not registered? You can still vote!

Did you miss the October 5th deadline for registering to vote?

Do you know that you can still vote in the November 2nd election?

A "grace period" is in effect through October 26. If you are not registered to vote, you must go to the County Clerk's office at 667 Ware Road on a Monday through Friday. You will be able to register and you must vote at that time.

To register, you must take two forms of identification, including one with your mailing address, such as a letter, bill, utility statement, etc.

If you are homeless, you will still need a mailing address. Don't have one? Send a piece of mail to yourself at the home of someone you know in McHenry County. Pick it up the next day and take it with you to the County Clerk's office.

No need to explain that you are homeless. Just present your ID and piece of mail.

When I called the Elections office today, two different employees first told me that the last day to register to vote had been October 5. I felt it was a good thing that I already knew about the grace period; otherwise, I might have hung up without probing further.

It would be better if they volunteered sooner that, indeed, an unregistered voter could still vote by registering in person on/before October 26 and voting at the time of registration!
