This morning's Northwest Herald carries a short article about two bicyclists who were injured east of Woodstock on Sunday morning. The reporter was unable to include the names of the bicyclists (thanks to the Woodstock Fire "Department") and did not include the driver's name (thanks to MCSD).
If I am elected Sheriff on November 2, press information will be available much more quickly than under the current regime. There is no reason to withhold a driver's name, and a deputy will be available and authorized to release information in a standard press format. There will be no waiting while "politically-correct" information is put together. Deputies and shift supervisors will have the responsibility to work with reporters, in all possible instances, so that the public can be well informed.
The Northwest Herald ought to know by now that there is no "Woodstock Fire Department". The name of the organization providing fire and rescue services in the Woodstock area is the Woodstock Fire Rescue District. It is independent of the City of Woodstock and has its own elected officials and tax base. Care to know more about it? Visit www.wfrd.org
When I read that they were struck "early Sunday morning", I wondered why they were out riding in the dark on McConnell Road. However, it wasn't dark; they were struck about 9:30AM. I guess if you are out late on Saturday night and then sleeping in, one might write that the accident happened "early" on Sunday morning. More correctly, they were struck "on Sunday morning" or "mid-morning on Sunday".

Much of the problem is that the NWH does not send reporters out to scenes anymore to gather information. In bygone days, the newspapers listened to the police and fire scanners and when something happened they went there. Not anymore. If it isn't in Crystal Lake the NWH will seldom go.
AFTER the fact they call and want info. The dispatchers don't have info and are not empowered to release any info anyway. The deputies are on the street investigating. SO what’s the NWH do? They print that information was unavailable. WRONG. Sergeants and deputies will make a statement giving basic information, but the NWH must do some legwork first. Maybe they should print, The Sheriff didn’t have a pre printed article for us to copy and paste, plus we were too lazy to go out and do some real journalism.
Today’s headline. Bicyclist hit by vehicle near Woodstock. DUH this shows ignorance. Thompson E. Wonder Lake Rte 120...sure sounds like WONDER LAKE to me.
