Sheriff gets life in prison!!!

There is a judge in this state who doesn't mess around. When he gets a sheriff in his court who trafficked marijuana on the job and who plotted to have someone killed, he meted out harsh punishment.

And how about these words from the good judge?

"nothing but a common thief"
"thug who disregarded the very laws that you swore to uphold, defend, protect and honor"
"arrogance, greed and power"
"your only regret is that you got caught"
"You represent the worst of humanity"
"evidence of guilt was so overwhelming"

Who is this judge? U.S. District Court Judge J. Phil Gilbert, in little ol' Benton, Illinois, where he sentenced former Gallatin County Sheriff Raymond Martin, 46, to prison for life, and no freedom during his anticipated appeal.

And where is Gallatin County? It's along the Illinois-Indiana state line at the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers. Benton is 25 miles south of Mount Vernon, Illinois, right off I-57, and Gallatin County is about 50 miles southeast of Benton.

Martin was the longest-serving sheriff in Gallatin County in records shown on the Illinois Sheriffs' Association website, which start with 1928. He took office in 1990 and held the office until 2008.
