MCCD wastes money on lights

The McHenry County Conservation District has apparently wasted at least some of the $8.5 Million it spent on development and improvement of current sites and trails.

Check out the photo in the morning's Northwest Herald of the solar lights along a cross-country skiing trail at the Pleasant Valley Conservation Area in Woodstock. What did that project cost?

Last summer a parent contacted me after her child was issued a ticket for being in a MCCD park after hours. He didn't mail in the $75, and the family coughed up $186.00 to get out of court.

Through March 13, you can cross-country ski there until 9:00PM. Guess they had to do something to justify the outlay. What's wrong with skiing by moonlight? How much could MCCD have saved? Just how many skiers will go there after dark?

If you want to know what a truly BIG business MCCD is and how many Millions of $$$s its budget is, get a report. It's a "public body", subject to FOIA and the Open Meetings Act. It owns almost 25,000 acres of land, including some that I believe is not even in McHenry County. Think any taxpayers ever show up at its monthly meetings? Just wonderin'...

Here is my spin on Mccd land
All conservation property belongs to the citizens of McHenry county and Illinois,
It does not belong to any given group.
WE the citizens set our tax dollars aside to hire people, to take care of and protect these lands. Now they tell us when we can use them, what time we have to leave,
This is our land, our property,
WE should be able to use it anytime we want to
