Boy eats pastry into "gun"

Sometimes I wonder what the height of stupidity really is. Check this out from Maryland.
"A 7-year-old Anne Arundel County (Md.) boy was suspended for two days for chewing his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun and saying, “bang, bang”— an offense that the school described as a threat to other students, according to his family.
The pastry “gun” was a rectangular strawberry-filled bar, akin to a Pop-Tart, that the second-grader had tried to nibble into the shape of a mountain Friday morning, but then found it looked more like a gun, said his father, William “B.J.” Welch.
Welch said an assistant principal at Park Elementary School in Baltimore told him that his son pointed the pastry at a classmate — though the child maintains he pointed it at the ceiling.
“In my eyes, it’s irrelevant; I don’t care who he pointed it at,” Welch said. “It was harmless. It was a danish.”
"But we must keep our children safe from Assault Pastries!"

What in the world is wrong with school districts, administrators, principals, teachers - and others?

Remember the fiasco right near here, in Island Lake, when a man was gesturing to a friend as he spoke, and a Village trustee and clerk had him arrested for pointing his .38 cal. finger at them? They had him charged with Disorderly Conduct. And his Chicago pro bono lawyer got it laughed out of court.

The problem with school suspensions is that they impose the suspension immediately and do not allow time for a hearing. Then, later, they might say "Oops", but the suspension has already been served.

I guess schools will be banning Pop-Tarts now. Oh, and maybe teeth, too.

What about the child in Michigan whose mother baked cupcakes and decorated them with PLASTIC TOY SOLDIERS in honor of our WWII vets. When the child took them to school the school rejected them because the toy soldiers were carrying rifles. The school administration said the toy soldiers were insensitive. So Gus, I have one question for you and your readers- WHEN WILL THE INSANITY STOP? Sorry, I didn't mean to yell but this nonsense drives me nuts.

The insanity will stop when enough parents go to their School Boards and demand that it stop.

I'm hoping that the local organization I'm in will decide to encourage members to apply pressure to School Boards and at School Board election times to begin restoring common sense to school district decisions.

In Maryland, where the assault pastry case occurred, a state lawmaker introduced a new law: "The Reasonable School Discipline Act of 2013″

The elements of the legislation: "Senate Bill 1058 restricts the disciplinary options Maryland public school officials can use for any student who “brings to school or possesses” an image of a gun or an object that might look like a gun but isn’t one.
Students could also form their fingers in the shape of a gun without fear of reprisal.
The bill also includes a section mandating counseling for school officials who fail to distinguish between guns and things that resemble guns. School officials who fail to make such a distinction more than once would face discipline themselves. Another provision of the proposed law would keep incidents involving non-threatening objects and images from going on a student’s permanent record. Elementary school-age students would be especially protected."

Thanks, C.K. I wonder where Maryland Sen. Jennings' bill will go.
