Nygren advisor: school bands to Mexico?

The Northwest Herald yesterday carried an article about plans of incumbent Sheriff Nygren and his purported "special advisor", Jose Rivera, a Crystal Lake businessman, to re-kindle community relations with two cities in Mexico.

I guess they don't read CNN.com news or read the travel warnings issued by the U.S. State Department.

CNN.com had this to say on July 23, 2010:

"The U.S. State Department has renewed a travel warning for Mexico due to drug-related violence, particularly in the northern border areas.

In addition, the authorized departure of family members of U.S. government personnel from consulates in the cities of Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey and Matamoros remains in place.

Not only does the State Department warn against travel, it authorizes departure of family members of U.S. government personnel! And Rivera thinks McHenry County band kids ought to go to Mexico???

OK, so CNN didn't specifically mention Zacatecas and Guadalupe, in Mexico's state of Zacatecas. I don't think Nygren's Posse will be of much help there.

If you have a choice between the Wisconsin Dells and Mexico for your kids' school band trip, may I urge you to stay state-side?

Keep reading CNN.com. Then you may see the story about the United States re-opening its counsel in Cuidad Juarez.

But Seriously said...

Gus the only issue with this one is the article states Nygren is rekindling the this relationship by inviting the Governor Elect here not sending anyone there. He in fact states it is not yet safe there.

I don't think Keith is the goodwill ambassador of McHenry County. He's the Sheriff.

If it's a political trip for the Gov. Elect, let him deal with someone else.

However, you do get me thinking about what kind of job the County Board will create for Keith, when he becomes unemployed on December 1. Then he can get in line for a 4th pension for his family.

Last time I checked, the sheriff enforces laws; he doesn't make them!

I think criticizing the Sheriff for inviting the Governor Elect here is a legitimate criticism. I respectfully disagree with it but none the less it is at least criticizing him for something he did.

My simple point is a few critics got a carried away in implying or in some cases outright stating the Sheriff said that it was safe for locals to go there. He simply never said that and in fact said quite the opposite.

But Seriously, thanks again for commenting. These discussions are years in advance of any future good-will trips. The gang killings in Mexico will take years to stop.

Nygren will be long gone. In any event, a county sheriff dealing with a state governor is the wrong pecking order.

And if he did get a deal in place, safety or not, then he could order deputies to go (or could he?). Maybe the only safe haven for deputies is to make sure they have lost their passports; i.e., keep them in their safe deposit boxes, from which they might "conveniently" disappear.

What did they do for weapons on past trips? Were they unarmed? If armed, legally? Or do officials in Mexico just look the other way on "minor points" like that?
