Yesterday was the main day of the 2010 Illinois Green Party State Convention. The convention was held on the campus of Loyola University Chicago, on Chicago's north side near Evanston.
The day was built around presentations by candidates for major State-wide offices, workshops, and short presentations by candidates for County and other local elected offices.
The metro Chicago area was well-represented, as was downstate Illinois.
Candidate for Governor Rich Whitney (photo with Gus) gave a rousing talk in the afternoon. Rich's keynote address is available now on his website at www.whitneyforgov.org/ You can also find it through Rich's link on the Illinois Green Party website at www.ilgp.org/ Check there for Rich Whitney's July 31st talk. (Hang in there through the short Google ad.)
I met Rich when he came through McHenry County this summer on his 600-mile bicycle and public-transportation tour. He is a good man to know and will be a great governor. Rich got 360,000 votes of governor in 2006. Rich is a lawyer, from Carbondale. Where would Illinois be, if Rich had been elected then, rather than Blago.
Tom Tresser, candidate for President of the Cook County Board, gave an interesting presentation about the Servant Leadership philosophy of Robert Greenleaf. As I listened to Tom, I realized just how much I am already living that philosophy. To learn more about it, visit www.greenleaf.org/
Thanks to large number of votes for Rich Whitney in 2006, the Green Party is an "established political party" in Illinois.

The McHenry County Chapter of the Illinois Green Party has two meetings scheduled before the November 2 General Elections. Watch for details about these meetings, which will be in September and October.
