Jacqueline Piggott |
The Blessing Barn was started in 2005 by Jacqueline and Russ Piggott. At first, they collected, cleaned and gave away shoes. Then clothing. And now, furniture. Area residents donate clothing and other items in good condition to the Barn, where it is sorted and placed in tubs according to gender and age.
The Barn is open on the first Saturday of the month from 9:00AM until 2:00PM at 8310 Railroad St. (turn the corner off Railroad St. onto Waller St. and go to the corner of Hillside Rd.), in Ridgefield. Generally, this is just north of McHenry County College in unincorporated Ridgefield, just west of Crystal Lake.
What do they need? Space. Space, and more space.
They would like to open additional locations in Harvard, Marengo and the east end of McHenry. What they need is a clean, serviceable building with a concrete floor. Electricity is important. Plumbing, water and heat would be nice, too. A wood-burning stove was donated to the current location.
Do you know a vacant building that might be available? If you do (or think you do), call Jacqueline Piggott right away. With all the empty buildings and space in this county, somebody must know of a place that could be made available for a good cause.
What else do they need? Some volunteers. Keep in mind that the Blessing Barn does not sell items. It gives them away. As one volunteer there today told me, he helps to "pay it forward". Today there were also two college students there - just helping out. Like to help out? Call Jacqueline.
If you'd like to read Brett Rowland's article in the archives of the Northwest Herald, check with your local library about free access to the archives. Old articles can be read without charge if you have a Woodstock Public Library card, and this may be true through other area libraries, too. Once you get to the Northwest Herald, search for "Piggott". The article will pop right up.
