Memorial Day in Woodstock

The City's annual Memorial Day ceremonies will take place in the Park in the Square at 10:00AM on Monday, May 31st.

The ceremony will be immediately followed by the annual Memorial Day Parade, which will proceed around the Square, west on West Jackson Street, and then back east on West Judd Street to disband at the Throop Street parking lot.

If you would like to review etiquette for passing U.S. flags,

Parading and Saluting the Flag
When the flag passes in a procession, or when it is hoisted or lowered, all should face the flag and salute.

The Salute
To salute, all persons come to attention. Those in uniform give the appropriate formal salute. Citizens not in uniform salute by placing their right hand over the heart and men with head cover should remove it and hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart.

Gus, I was told once by a Rear Admiral that veterans not in uniform but who did serve could also appropriately salute the flag in a military manner also. Is this a fact?

Thanks, Doc. Locally, I've learned that it is acceptable for a veteran not in uniform to salute the flag, if he is wearing a military cap or "cover". The man wearing a baseball cap or other hat should remove it and hold it in his right hand over his heart (technically, hand over his heart and hat above his hand toward his shoulder).

We'll agree that the respect to the Flag is what counts and the intention, even if it doesn't quite fit the book.

Idle conversation should cease, too, as the Flag passes.

I suppose if you are a citizen of another country, you should stand in a position of respect, even if you don't salute.
