Oh, deer. No help.

Be sure to read the article in today's Northwest Herald about the folks who pitched in to rescue a deer that had fallen through the ice on Crystal Lake.

And be as disturbed as I am at the comments that neighbors had called "police and fire" and found no help. "Officials there could not help," said Derek Rauchenberger.

What? So the police and fire would just wait until a rescuer fell through the ice and then respond? Did Rauchenberger mean they wouldn't help at all? No assistance? No ideas?

We've all heard of firefighters rescuing cats from trees. But they wouldn't act to save a deer either on the ice or which had fallen through the ice. You know, folks; water with ice on top is not swimming temperature.

I invite those who were there to contact me and report the departments they contacted and with whom they spoke. Let's have some names. What did you report? Deer on the ice? Through the ice? People on Crystal Lake on thin ice?

Three cheers those who pitched in and saved the deer.
