A deal was struck yesterday between prosecutors and Steven Hubbard, avoiding many months more of court calls and expense for both the County, where Hubbard had been jailed since his arrest, and for Hubbard in terms of legal fees.
I didn't intend to write about this, but a huge error in the Northwest Herald story prompts this. The Northwest Herald reported that Hubbard would have to pay a $500 fine "plus court costs".
Online court records today indicate that it'll cost Hubbard $2,904 in fines and court costs on the felony convictions. If his "fine" was (only) $500, then public ought to be interested that a convicted person gets slammed with $2,404 in "costs" and "fees".
The public is also misled, not by the Northwest Herald, but by practices allowed or controlled by the court and the jail that permit a sentenced person to leave jail before the completion of his sentence. Hubbard was sentenced to six months in the Nygren Hotel and released on a credit-for-time-served deal. He was charged on August 3.
