It's not often that I'm willing to highly recommend a book before I've finished it, but this book deserves the Exception category.
A number of years ago I got in touch with Ken Rossignol, when he was publishing St. Mary's Today - a weekly "rag" in southern Maryland. I think Ken and I must be kindred spirits; we both detest many government bodies, functionaries and much so-called police work. And we will both compliment jobs well done by police, when they are.
Ken hates DUI drivers, as do I. "Hate" is a word I don't use much. Another exception today.
The book? Ken Rossignol's The Story of the RAG! It was just released in December, and it's only available via Kindle. Now, you don't have to own a Kindle to read it; Amazon.com will let you download it to your PC.
Read the summary of the book and the reviews, and then buy it for $9.99. You can start reading it about a minute later. No wait. No shipping. And you'll never have to dust it on your bookshelf.
You'll find yourself thinking about McHenry County a lot as you read it. I wonder why...
You'll love why Ken started the "rag". And what he accomplished with it. Read about the county sheriff who sent his deputies to follow the delivery trucks with the weekly print edition of the rag right before an election, when the rag was putting out a tell-all issue. Deputies emptied the newsboxes of the papers - and got caught at it. That little stunt cost the sheriff $425,000, when the Federal Court got done with him.
Ken sold St. Mary's Today (the "rag") last year and has written three books and started a new online paper, the DWI Hit Parade. Just click on the link in the right sidebar to read about all the DWIs who are being nabbed around the country. His books are The Privateer Clause, Return of the Sea Empress and The Chesapeake: Legends, Yarns & Barnacles. Each one is a good read.
