When, why is fighting legal?

The Woodstock Independent carried a full back-page article last week on Woodstock's "fighting machine," Jeff Curran.

So here's the question. If two kids (or men) duke it out on Main Street, they both go to the slammer.

But if two guys get in a ring at the Woodstock VFW on July 24 and try to (almost) kill each other, it's okay, since it's for charity?

Ringside tickets are $53.50. If you want to sit back from the blood and gore a little, pick a table for $43.00/seat. Or just get in the door for $27.25. This is probably something you don't take the kiddies to.

But exactly what is it that makes it legal? What defines "sport" and separates it from street fighting? Besides a street, I mean.
