Jill's letter

There is a Letter to the Editor in this morning's Northwest Herald by Jill Sullivan, who was in the Woodstock Pizza Hut recently. She wrote about being in line behind a carry-out customer whose debit card was denied twice and whose transaction had delayed other customers.

The Pizza Hut employee comped the customer for the pizzas, and Jill noticed that the customer didn't thank the employee. Those who are perfect rushed out of their closets to blast Jill.

Actually, I liked Jill's letter. Being polite (or not) is something that needs to be addressed. We are living in a society that is becoming ruder by the day. Whether it's holding a door for a woman or helping her with her coat or opening the car door or letting her precede you in line, a thank-you is always appreciated.

I have to bite my tongue in Woodstock to keep from saying, "You're welcome!" when a woman doesn't say thanks. Too busy on the cell phone? Hang up.

There are reasons besides NSF for which debit cards might be declined. Ask your bank. If you make even a small purchase with a debit card, the bank might "freeze" a much larger amount for up to 2-3 days. So that coffee and donut in the morning for $2 on your debit card might stop a $30 pizza purchase for dinner.

And who knows? Maybe the Pizza Hut customer will return and pay for her pizzas, and maybe she'll say Thank You then.

Isn't human nature wonderful! Like the IRS after I pay my taxes...not even an automated e-mail "Thank You".
