Inmate pepper-sprayed, dies

Like to read how an inmate of the Lee County (Florida) Jail was treated? Lee County is, of course, where our own sheriff maintains a home in Cape Coral. Does he ever pay a visit on the reigning sheriff in Lee County?

In 2008 a mentally-ill inmate was strapped naked into a chair and pepper-sprayed. Nick Christie, 62, from Ohio, died. Now, notice I use the word "inmate". This occurred IN the jail. He was pepper-sprayed after he was strapped, naked, into the chair and a hood placed over his head.

Pepper-spray is used to subdue someone, to incapacitate them. Not to punish them after they are in custody.

The inmate's widow says she begged deputies to provide needed treatment to her husband, but they refused.

The Coroner ruled the death was a homicide.

What did the Lee County State's Attorney do? "The Lee County state's attorney cleared the sheriff's department of any wrongdoing. None of the officers involved have even been disciplined," according to "Dr. X", who writes blog that can be read at http://drx.typepad.com/psychotherapyblog/2011/12/police-mental-illness.html  See the article, which was posted December 27, 2011.
