Tonya - down to the wire

Tonya Franklin, Gus Philpott
Tonya Franklin's race is coming down the final stretch. The first "final" stretch.

Volunteers this week gathered at Vaughan's Restaurant for a phone bank and called precinct committeepeople in an effort to get them to tomorrow morning's Special Meeting of the Republican Central Committee.

The results were looking pretty good at 9:00PM for a quorum at 9:00AM tomorrow at D'Andrea's in Crystal Lake. As I understand it, a quorum for tomorrow's Special Meeting will be 40% of the 150 precinct committeemen. If a quorum is present, then two representatives will be elected, and then they, along with Party Chairman Mike Tryon, will adjourn to a place in the 63rd District and decide whether to give Tonya Franklin a green light.

If they do, then Tonya and her followers have a busy two days ahead of them to gather about 1,500 signatures, which must be presented in Springfield by 5:00PM on Monday.

Why would the Republican Party default and not back Tonya to run against incumbent Jack Franks? Jack has been unopposed in either two or three past elections.

You'll find much more interesting reading about Tonya's campaign on Cal Skinner's McHenry County Blog.

One ugly incident marred tonight's calling session. A couple of protesters showed up along the roadway in front of Vaughan's bearing a sign with an ugly message. I watched from inside until one of them pursued Tonya back toward the Vaughan's entrance. His advance looked threatening to me, and I headed outside. The two took off for the rear parking lot, crossed onto the next property and cut through a fence opening toward the bar and the freight company.

If you know this guy (photo with sign), please notify the Woodstock Police Department.

Intimidation of political candidates will not be tolerated!

What was the UGLY message? Care to share?

Since meager Gus could frighten them away, they must have been real tough.

Somehow this seems STAGED.

US, it was my choice to omit the content of the message from my article. No, I don't care to share it.

I wondered whether it is illegal to wear a mask in public that hides your face. Seems to me that it is. Not sure.

"FLORIDA Chapter 876 Criminal Anarchy, Treason and other Crimes Against Public Order
876.13 Wearing mask, hood, or other device on public property.--No person or persons shall in this state, while wearing any mask, hood, or device whereby any portion of the face is so hidden, concealed, or covered as to conceal the identity of the wearer, enter upon, or be, or appear upon or within the public property of any municipality or county of the state."

Other states have similar laws. I don't know if Illinois has such a law.
