MCC - in travel business?

McHenry County College (MCC) is a college; right? An educational institution? A school? Right?

Then why is it in the travel business? In this morning's Northwest Herald, a three-column spread (looked like more than nine column-inches to me) gave free advertising for Rhine River cruise that will set a traveler back $3,733 (for a twin) or $5,578 for a single room!

Why is MCC competing with local travel agencies, which must be dying on the vine from declining business? Why is MCC trying to attract paying customers for an April 23, 2012 departure?

Isn't this the same MCC that wants to pay its faculty at rates "competitive" with other two-year colleges? The school that wants to condemn neighboring property (under the right of eminent domain) and scarf it up for half its value? That just formed a "police" department and has at least one Ford Interceptor cop car for chasing down smokers in the parking lot?

John Q. Public had better step up and start reminding the Trustees that MCC is a two-year community college, not the Harvard or Yale of McHenry County!

I haven't seen the article, but it is fairly common for colleges (well...at least 4 years colleges) to sponsor trips for alumni and students. I understand that these alumni trips help to subsidize (or reward, depending on your POV) student travel for overseas study. I admit I don't know what coursework they have at MCC that would benefit from such travel...perhaps sending culinary students to France? Art students to Rome? Or criminal justice students to London for the Sherlock Holmes tour.
