In yesrterday's paper a Page 1 article showed a photo of a McHenry County College police officer (no longer security officer - see the uniform and Sam Browne belt?) speaking to a student in the Commons.
The article read, "MCC implements database to combat theft of phones, other devices."
How in the world will a database "combat" theft of phones, computers and other devices? It won't. It will be a record of who owns what (assuming students register their electronic equipment) and reports of whose devices were stolen (assuming students report those).
The database is not going to "combat" theft. When a student leaves his computer, iPhone, etc. on a table and rushes off to a bathroom, it just might be gone when he returns. But only 15 thefts were reported in 2010, only five of which were electronic devices. How many students are there? Seven thousand (7,000)?
And MCC is creating a program for that?

Once they have a database of all electronic devices on campus, they can start charging a tax...err...fee for the privilege of using them inside the chateau de Smith
