Fox News beats up Dorothy Brown

A reader sent me this link to a Fox News story about Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown, who is trying to dislodge Todd Stroger from his elected position as President of the Cook County Board.

The reader's comment with the link was "This is exactly what Nygren did only his was worse. the courthouse was built with taxpayer funds."

As I watched the video, I considered that Clerk Brown appeared to be in a public portion of the building. She was not in her office, in a conference room, or in any place not wide open to the public. So, to me, her campaign activity did not violate an ethics (or other) rule in Illinois or Chicago.

In the case of Sheriff Nygren, a photograph of then-candidate Dan Regna and him in the Nygren's office clearly appears to be for political purposes and was so used. An office of an elected official should not be used for political purposes.

Had they stepped out into the courtyard or the parking lot or onto the front lawn, outside of the secured area of the courthouse? No problem with that (for me).

Have you ever heard the song "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" by Jim Croce? This Sheriff's race reminds me of that. You have Nygren (Big Jim Walker) who has established himself as the tough guy around the county. Big man, drives a fancy car and everyone is scared of him. Nyren (Jim) screws over a young guy named Zane (in the song Zane would be "Billy McCoy", "but down home they call him Slim")In the song "Slim" didn't know he was supposed to be afraid of "Jim". Same situation here. Zane has no fear when it comes to Nygren. "...and when the cuttin' was done the only part that wasn't bloody was the soles of the big man's feet." The song ends with the chorus changing to "You don't mess around with Slim". With everythng I have read and heard, when the cuttin (elections, lawsuits and investigations) is done we are all going to be singing "You don't mess around with Zane!".

The people have waited a long time for a fight like this. Politics in this county will never be the same.
