In a desperate attempt to chase the sheriff and close the gap on the income from the jail bed-rental program, the McHenry County Animal Control folks are holding a "Pets and Santa Christmas card photo" shoot on Sunday, November 7, at the publicly-owned, taxpayer-supported McHenry County Animal Control in the old State Farm offices.
You get to haul your own pet over to 100 North Virginia Street between 12:00-3:00PM, make him sit, make him smile, make him stop wagging his tail or peeing on the floor, and fork over $10.00 for a 4x6 color photo of Santa and your pet in a Christmas card setting. Who will be Santa? Is there anyone in McHenry County government who will play Santa? Ken? Where are you? Keith? (I hear he has already split for Minocqua.)
"Bah, humbug!" I say. Take your own photos. Email them to Walgreen's, and pick them up in four hours for about $0.19 each (or less).
Why should a tax-supported County department in a tax-supported building be sponsoring a Santa-and-your-pet photo shoot? Why should a county "business" be competing with a tax-paying, commercial business trying to survive in a Depression?
I don't get it. Are they doing it just because they can?
From the County's press release, "Pet adoptions are also available during these hours. Adoption fees are $80 and include all vaccinations, spay/neuter, FELV & FIV testing, microchip, de-worming, free 1st Veterinarian visit and discounted grooming. Animals available for adoption can be viewed online at www.mcdh.info (click on Animal Control). For more information, call Animal Control at 815-459-6222."

Helps pay for the food etc for the animals and may prevent some unfortunate pooch from taking the needle. Good for them.
Go rent a feel good movie .....SCROOGE
You're wrong on this one, Gus. MCAC offers wonderful animals/pets for adoption at lower prices thanks to fundraising and volunteer efforts. Would you rather our taxes go up?
Do a comparison of what non-county animal shelters charge for adoption fees, and I think you'll understand.
I have no quarrel with the basic function of MCAC - the collection and protection of abandoned animals and adopting them out.
It's the "photo shoot with Santa" to which I object. That is NOT a proper function of a County department.
Fundraisers like "Photo Shoot with Santa" help keep adoption costs down. That was my point.
