Gus Philpott, Woodstock, Ill., has announced his candidacy for the Office of Sheriff of McHenry County, Ill.

Philpott, who will run as a Green Party candidate, is concerned about arrest procedures that recently attracted considerable adverse publicity to the Sheriff’s Department. Reports of racial profiling are of high concern to him, too. Other areas of great concern are the number of at-fault traffic accidents involving deputies and the high legal expenses incurred by the Sheriff’s Department.

Philpott will begin circulating petitions in August for his run to be the next Sheriff in McHenry County. The Primary Election will be February 2, 2010, and the General Election will be November 2, 2010.
Many thanks to Cal Skinner for the photo. Be sure to read www.McHenryCountyBlog.com

That's great that you've got all these concerns, however shouldn't your "Press Release" mention a thing or two about your qualifications?

Eeeek, I just had a vision of a renegade cop hell bent on "payback" and wasting time on petty complaints and not having concern for real issues.

Well, I always say the pundits should have the guts to put their money where their mouth is and actually run for office.

Thank you Gus. I respect you.

Contact me at admin@carsandracingstuff.com, I think I have a few ways in which I can help.

Have you contacted the IL state Green Party? I'm sure you'll be hearing from them if you haven't already been in contact with them.

As a Green member myself and considering you are a potential Green candidate I would to know how you feel about the Green Party's 10 Key Values?

Go Gus! It's a good thing to have more choices out there. I think people are tired of the same old same old.

Watch, now the fear mongering will start. Guarantee it!

Walter, thanks. Yes, I'm in contact with the party. Almost went to Urbana for the State meeting. Am connected in Woodstock. I'll be commenting on the connection between my values and the Ten Key Values over the next months. Hope to meet you. Are you in McHenry County?

So when can we expect to hear about your qualifications? And in asking that, there's no attempt at disrespect or snarkiness. I genuinely want to know what makes you believe you're qualified to run the SO.

Well, that would mean that he would actually have to HAVE qualifications! Buying your own motorcycle so you could drive around and play cop in the 60's do not count.

Heaven help us and the police departments in the county if he should ever get arrested. The hatred he shows for police officers in his blog should be a giant red flag for anybody even considering signing his petitions, much less voting for him.

Funny how I called this one. Said already that since Gus can not qualify to be a cop in Illinois due to his lack in training and age, that he would run for either police commission or sheriff so that he could walk around and play cop again.

Just in the last month alone, look at how many posts of his indicate his tendency to bash the police without knowing the full story. Sounds like a certain president that did the same thing on national tv, condemning a police department without having any of the facts, only the story of the person "violated" by the police. Notice how the president had to backpedal once all the facts became public?

Karen may call it fear mongering, but it is not really fear mongering when it is based on Gus's previous opinions and posts on his own blog.

DA, I was just curious on a broader plane what quals he has or is lacking. There clearly isn't enough of a law enforcement background to stand on, concerns with the SO aside. Is there ANY upper-level management experience? ANY government admin? ANY significant responsibilities whatsoever? College degree? ANY relevant experience (relevant being the key)? I'm curious to find out what exactly Gus thinks his job responsibilities will be.

I see the profile description on this blog has changed, but unfortuantely an appearance on "The View" does not, in my opinion = a qualification.

I've asked twice for something regarding qualifications, and have seen nothing in return. Maybe he's tweaking a resume..I dunno.

And I think you meant "elected" not "arrested". Should that come to fruition, I predict a mass exodus from the SO, but then he could oversee his own new and improved hiring process. It could be like the Island of Misfit Toys! Who wants a Charlie in the Box or a train with square wheels???

Gus,

Glad to sign your petition for the sake of encouraging participation in our democratic process.

I read the Green Party's 10 Key Values @ http://ilgp.org/about/10-key-values/

They are better off just sticking with the Ten Commandments.

These guys are to the left of Liberal talk show host Michael Savage.

Lots of luck in your association with the "Greens".

Have a good day.

I tell you what Gus, I'll stop bashing you because I know you will never get elected once people find out who you are and stumble across this blog. Iceberg straight ahead!!!

I live in Buffalo Grove so it's a bit of a drive for me, I look forward to learning more about your campaign.

@Joe Ptak: We're a pretty Big Tent and inclusive party. I don't think its fair to peg the Greens on the left-right spectrum. We believe in open government and transparency, fiscal responsibility, an decentralization of power - traditional conservative tenets. I've actually met my share of Republicans who are now Greens because they are tired of the GOP sable ratting and I've actually met a few anti-abortion/anti-death penalty Greens who base those two beliefs on the consistent life ethic.

All in all, Green polices are just commonsensical and not too radical when you look evidence and other countries. Like I said, we're a pretty diverse and inclusive group that may disagree on policy on some things but those 10KVs are what we all believe.

Walter, many thanks for your comments.

QWA, are there requirements to be sheriff? We have a president with no qualifications. What qualifications did the current sheriff have before he was appointed to the position. The current sheriff runs the SO with intimidation, is that a good quality.I don't know enough about Gus to know I want him as sheriff, but its better than the current choice.

Franker said...

As the saying goes "you have a snowballs chance in hell". But really, what do you even do for a living? Yeah Yeah, I know you PLAYED parttime cop once in your life but really what on earth gives you the right to think you even are qualified to run for this position?

Franker said...

Frank Philpott: don't you think you should be running with your legal name? Also when is the last time you had a problem with how POLICE WORK was done? Oh, what do I mean? When is the last time you wrote about the police screwing up the investigation or arrest on a Robbery, Burglary, Murder, or anything other than traffic and local ordinances?

Joe Ptak said...

Walter,
In looking up the Green Party you will find the following:

Before the formation of a national party, early Greens were committed to an emphasis on educational projects and non-partisan activism. The idea of an "anti-party party" was formed by Petra Kelly and other leaders of Die Grünen in Germany. Their vision was a non-traditional organization in which electoralism would be the least important…

The highest-ranking Greens ever elected in the nation (U.S.)were: John Eder, a member of the Maine House of Representatives until his defeat on November 7, 2006; Audie Bock, elected to the California State Assembly in 1999 but switched her registration to Independent seven months later[2] running as an independent in the 2000 election; [3] and Richard Carroll, elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives in 2008 but switched parties to become a Democrat five months after his election.

I wonder what those politicians discovered to jump ship so fast.

Quite honestly, I believe that any political party imported from Europe and anywhere else for that matter, into the United States for the purpose of showing Americans how to properly govern, is strictly a reuse for Socialism, Fascism and or Communism.

Therefore I can see why it makes sense to have a "BIG TENT" to hide under.

Americans have fought the Hessians during the Revolutionary in order to gain our independence then again in WWI and WWII. Now you are telling me what a great ideals these Europeans have and that we should embrace these ideals.

Feed this hogwash to the mindless.

All in all, Green policies (I assume you mean ideals) are just comical and pure propaganda that appeal to the 6th grade level political mentality.

If guys like Gus want to be associated with the Greens that’s his right and I would still sign his petition.

However, if I was his campaign manager, I would strongly advise him to run as an independent. I suspect Gus has enough people who don’t particularly care for him already. By him associating himself with the Greens (who have no law abiding credentials) to run a major law body would be farcical.

Good luck Gus (really).

HA! This is great!!! You're finally actually DOING SOMETHING!!!!
I'll vote for ya, as long as you don't go after me for all my posts! :)
Make sure you differentiate yourself as a strong & fair law enforcement official versus the "duffus" you appear to be at times on this blog.
Good luck Bigg Shooter!

Gus, or Frank, whatever the case may be... We are ALL awaiting your qualifications for this job. Please do not leave us hangin....

You do know that Hell has not froze over, Pigs are not flying and the only fat lady that is singing is almost dead anyways?? You will not win this, why waste your money...or supporters money at that?

GeneL is the reason Gus will pursue this. "it's better than the current choice". Is it? You sure about that, GeneL?

Oh, do be careful what you wish for.

GeneL said...

QWA, why don't you run for sheriff, with all your vast knowledge and experience. At least Gus has the guts to run against the bully Nygren and the republican good ole boys.Everyone else is too afraid. The deputies will be too scared to endorse anyone else, they can't even speak freely off duty. QWA, unless you are going to run, you should shut up.Why do you even read this blog.

To paraphrase Eddie Murphy "There's anew sheriff in town ...and he's a frickin' idiot."

I guess one of the things that bother me the most is that people become angry when a person seeks election. What exactly is there to be angry at?

Isn't the whole idea of democracy that we should have a variety of choices, a variety of ideas to choose from.

This is why not many people who would be qualified, run for office. It's just such a zoo. Perhaps we should have every position appointed by a knowledgeable board--the politboro--just like in places that run really well, like Russia.

Da, komrade. Thanks for the good laugh this morning! Now, where is my old Russian dictionary? And Passport?

Maybe we'll have an exchange program with the KGB...

************************

Wouldn't you rather base your statements on fact rather than your personal hatred for a certain sheriff?

Gus has much, much more experience as a police officer than Obama had in government? I don't think so!

Let us compare the two, shall we?

Obama attended Columbia University, where he majored in political science with a specialization in International Relations.

After graduating, he went to work as a community organizer in Chicago. Following three years of helping some of Chicago's poorest residents recover from a steel mill closing through job training programs, he went to Harvard Law. There, he became the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review. Instead of seeking a high paying job upon graduating from Harvard, he returned to Chicago and went back to the neighborhood communities by organizing and helping to register 150,000 voters. He then began working at a civil rights firm and went on to teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago. He did all of this before his career in politics began.

He has ten years experience in public office, Barack's first eight years spent in the Illinois senate before his two plus years of service in the U.S. Senate.

How does Gus stack up to this?

Unknown said...

Let us now talk about Gus Philpott's vast experience, shall we?

Although semi-retired, Philpott still works as a hypnotherapist. He said he had a varied business background that included 15 years as a life insurance salesman.

Philpott has some experience in law enforcement. He worked as a part-time officer in Mount Vernon, Iowa, in 1963-64. Later, Philpott was a volunteer member of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department from 1973 to 1981.

“I worked as many as 25 hours a week without pay, and I loved it,” Philpott said.

HMMMMM.....Where is all this experience that you speak of? No full time police experience at all? no certified training as a police officer? Did he actually work as a police officer for Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department or was it in some other capacity? Has not been involved in any official capacity in police work in almost 30 years? Think the job may have changed a little since then?

Please enlighten your readers on all this valuable police experience Gus brings to the table.

Unknown said...

GeneL,

Finally, you ask what qualifications did the current sheriff have before getting elected?

McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren has worked in law enforcement for 42 years. He worked in Crystal Lake for 26 years, the final four as police chief. He won election as sheriff in 1998 and will be seeking his fourth term.

As far as experience goes, I think that may trump Gus and his 20-25 hours a week of playing cop almost 30 years ago, no?

GeneL said...

DA, did Obama ever actually have a JOB. You know, actually work for pay. Community organizer, what a joke. Palin had more executive experience than Harvard boy. Is he even a US citizen. All those ACORN voters he registered were probabily 100 people registered multiple times. His 2 years in the Senate were spent campaigning.Where are all his Senate accomplishments. It sounds like you voted for the socialist. I hope he redistributes your wealth, makes you drive a Prius, and lets you die while waiting for an organ transplant.

GeneL said...

DA, as far as Nygren, has he done anything in the last 20 years. Chief of Crystal Lake is a joke. Every time the chief retires ,the city does a nationwide search for a replacement . The last four times they have always found the next chief right in their dept., go figure. Sounds more like who you know than what you know. Nygren' last arrest was probabily about the same time as Gus's. Nygren has been unopposed in the last two elections. How many hours a week is he actually in the office. How many lawsuits are there currently against the dept. .My taxes are high enough, it's time for a change.Anybody!

Hey, GeneL. I'm thinking of changing my name, to improve my chances in November 2010.

First choice: An Y. Body
Second choice: N. O. Ne

Gus, confuse the voters, go with "The Bully" or "The Walrus". I decided not to send my other suggestions.
