Energy seminar at first green bag lunch

A really worthwhile energy seminar was presented at noon today on the second level of the Woodstock Square Mall. Don Jarrett (photo) gave a fast-moving and humorous talk titled "Why Does My House Hate Me?"

Don gave the audience excellent examples of the savings of CFL light bulbs over incandescant bulbs, and then of the newer LED bulbs over the CFL-style bulbs.

Don also gave tips on lowering your home heating bill by use of attic blankets, insulation of attic access and outer doors, hot water tanks, and ductwork.

A very good question came from the audience about whether a TV that is turned off uses power. The answer is "Yes." So unplug the TV and VCR that aren't used and that laser printer that you use only occasionally.

Changing your furnace air filter every three months will save you more than the cost of the filters. Don also explained an easy test of your refrigerator and freezer doors. And pull out that refrigerator and vacuum all the dust off the coils. When is the last time you did that?

Don can be reached at 800.682-4950. He is President of Dorje Renewable Energy Systems. Call him and ask him how he might help you with saving some big bucks on your home energy bills. And visit http://www.green-renewable-energy-solutions.com/

Today's green bag lunch program is part of a series sponsored by ECOmmunity Public Action Network. Informal lunch-hour "meet ups" will be held on the third Thursday of each month, 12:00PM-1:00PM. For information, visit their Facebook page or email ECOnet.mchenry@gmail.com

Thanks, Gus! Great write-up; you ask some very incisive questions.
