I believe there are many good law enforcement officers in McHenry County, both with the McHenry County Sheriff's Department and the various municipal agencies within the County. (No, I am not being paid to write this...)
You'll come across them many times and in a variety of ways. You may even have found "bright lights in your life", when you have been stopped for a traffic violation. If you were treated fairly, politely, respectfully, honestly, you probably don't have a gripe about getting stopped.
You knew whether you had violated a traffic law, or you learned that you had violated a traffic law that you didn't know about.
I'll venture a guess that the honest, polite officers do not like what they see around them. When they see abuse of a citizen by another officer, they don't like it. They might or might not be in a position to interrupt it; they might just have to stand there, watch it, and wish it weren't happening.
I imagine that the deputy who reportedly said "I didn't sign up for this" falls into this category - the category of not liking situations where police exceed their lawful authority and get away with it. (I don't know that deputy or even his name.)
Law enforcement officers have a sometimes-dangerous job. One of the problems is that they don't know when it might turn dangerous, so that they have to be careful 100% of the time.
