"Dear Attorney General Madigan,
"I am disappointed that you are appealing the ruling of the three-judge panel at the Court of Appeals. I am a college graduate, retired, a former police officer, a former deputy sheriff and a former candidate for County Sheriff in Illinois.
"I want concealed carry. I believe the majority of law-abiding citizens in Illinois want concealed carry. It is being blocked by a handful of Cook County Democrats.
"You represent the People of Illinois. Please stop interfering with our privilege to lawfully defend ourselves away from our homes. Please retract your appeal and tell the legislators to get out of the way. Thank you."

Just a question for you Gus. I figure you are somewhere around 65 years of age. In your 6 and a half decades just how many times have you felt the need to draw a weapon and take a life? To risk taking the life of some innocent bystander? To escalate a manageable situation into one that ends in a tragedy for someone not involved. Carrying a lethal weapon is a huge responsibility. Knowing when to use or NOT use it takes training and experience.

In about 1975 I was robbed at gunpoint in a restaurant parking lot in Denver.
When I was a reserve deputy in Colorado, I was chasing a suspect one night, when he ran into his apartment, dove for the couch and stuck his hand far under a cushion. You'd better believe I was ready to shoot, if he hadn't followed orders.
Went into a restaurant after-hours on a burglar alarm call. A car had left the parking lot in a hurry as we pulled in. Back door was open. Gun out that time, too.
And went into a house one cold night at midnight. Front doors were standing open; neighbors called. Certainly didn't want to shoot the owners, if they were in bed; but didn't want to get shot by a burglar, either.
So I guess I have the training and experience. Most civilians will end up only with training, but I am not concerned that they will shoot unless warranted and believe they will watch for innocent bystanders.
Experience helps. I agree about the huge responsibility.
Gus, get rid of that 380 and get a real caliber gun. You are going to upset a criminal one day with t if you have to shoot him/her.
John, as a long time Police Officer in a major city, I can tell you that CCW is desperately needed. I can also tell you many,many stories about the times in which a person could have prevented death or injury to themselves if they had had a concealed weapon. But I'll just mntion this one fo now. Tinl Parl Illinois. Lane Byrants. A few years ago. The women that forced to lie on the floor and were then each shot in the head by a deranged criminal. Had one of those women, just one been in possession of a small, easily concealed pistol they might still be here today. Ther are alot of bad people out there John and we need firearms to protect ourselves from them. Don't be so arrogant as to think that just because a citizen has a gun that a bad situation will escalate or that that citizen will turn it into a bloodbath. It might however if he/she doesn't.
Big Daddy, thanks for the advice to get a "real" gun. Wish I had kept the Browning 9mm Hi-Power that I bought in 1982. Wish I'd never sold any of the handguns I've owned, even the S&W revolvers.
I suppose I ought to buy the handgun that I'll want to carry, if I live long enough to see Illinois pass concealed carry or move to Wisconsin or elsewhere.

Chicago and Cook County will always attempt to impose their will upon the entire State of Illinois. All alderman in Chicago are legally able to carry concealed and really don't care about the average citizen. They believe we are all lack the intelligence necessary to make our own decisions. Lisa Madigan is just another Chicago politician who is living in her own little safe world. Perhaps Chicago should take a good look at their gun control for the last 20 years and compare that to other like cities. It doesn't work. How many gun deaths in a gun control city does it take for these politicians to recognize the actual facts. Gun control forces those who obey laws to become victims and empowers those who don't to rob them without fear..
