The Herald-News, a Sun-Times publication, is reporting retirements from the Merit Commission of the Will County (Ill.) Sheriff's Department.
The story may not be told entirely by the retirements. The chairman, 90 years old and a retired state police major, is leaving the Commission. They call it "retiring". Will he receive some financial benefit for his service as a Commissioner? Well, it's about time, and I don't even know him. But a 90-year-old man as chairman of an important commission? No slight intended, but let's get with modern times.
Is the Merit Commission of the Will County S/O just a figurehead commission? A second member, a dentist, is leaving the Commission after 20 years.
But the real story is in the appointments and the other members, many of whom are retired law enforcement officials. Now, you tell me how the public is fairly represented, when the Commission is weighted so heavily with law-enforcement brains.
A Merit Commission is a public body; it's there to represent the public. The public must be asleep in Will County.
