When Beth Bentley disappeared in May 2010, was anyone immediately on the alert for the following changes?
While these are taken from a current story about a 10-year-old girl in Colorado whose body was found Wednesday and identified on Friday, why wouldn't they apply to an adult woman missing from Illinois (Woodstock? Mt. Vernon? Centralia?)?
One of the problems is that no one wanted to say very quickly that she might have been other-than-missing. But once the "I dropped her off in Centralia" story started to implode, why didn't police immediately ask the people for help? And I don't mean by burying a Notice far down on the City's website where no one will ever see it.
The following is from an Associated Press story in the Colorado case last week:
"... the FBI's
Behavioral Analysis Unit released a list of changes that a person
committing a crime against a child would exhibit. Among them: sudden
differences in appearance, missed appointments, being absent from work,
or leaving town with no explanation.
"'It could be your boss, it
could be your friend, and ultimately it could be your family member,'
FBI spokesman Dave Joly said. 'Bring this information to law
enforcement and let us vet that to a close. If that person is not the
suspect, 'Thank you for your call.' Next lead.'
"Retired
FBI behavioral analyst Clinton Van Zandt told The Associated Press
that some things to look out for include a person suddenly growing a
beard, cutting their hair or doing other things to change their
appearance. Other clues are activities that are out of character, such
as a person who may have detailed their car when he normally would have
only washed it, Van Zandt said."
Even now it's not too late to provide leads to the Woodstock Police Department in this case. It will never be too late, at least not until Beth is found and any person responsible for her disappearance is brought to justice.

There have been a number of programs about the Tara Grant case in Michigan(2007). I recognize that there are some differences in Tara's case and Beth's case. To quote wikipedia: 'During the search, Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel told the public that he would hold a press conference each day during the search, until Tara was eventually found.'

Tara's husband reported her missing. She had children and although the police knew that her voluntarily leaving was a possibility, they also investigated the possibility that some thing more sinister had happened to her. Outstanding police work paid off and the mystery was solved - in 2 weeks! I just STILL can not understand how the WPD thinks that staying quiet - especially since the case covers a broad area/many jurisdictions, is going to help - the only way I can imagine sorting that out would be to reach out to the public, continually, for information. Also, 'signs of life' - computer software that LE uses to attempt to locate people via SS number/bday/utilities records etc etc, has presumably come up empty - so if they think she may have left voluntarily, how long before they concede that it is possible that she did not?? The 'serial texter', the beauty salon fan, the loving mom that I read 'called her kids every night' - someone who, I'll deduce, more easily could have gotten a divorce or separation, if that is what she wanted, and kept a relationship with her children than just suddenly 'disappear' willfully. Name anything that could possibly be soo extreme that she would willingly stay away from her kids for this long, without a word, without a hit on her SS number, etc and if someone is going to name it, make sure it makes some kind of sense, please, because some of the ideas that were floated out there in the beginning were pretty ridiculous.
I remembered something the other day, I can't remember where I read about it, very possibly here Gus - do you remember it being said that the police did not take Beth's camera or something to that effect? I wonder if they ever took computers that she had access to, to analyze. So much time has passed - I wonder how much evidence has been lost to time - and silence. Love ya or not, disagree with what you say or not, I commend you for faithfully writing about Beth's case each week, that is more than anyone else that I'm aware of can say. I'm certain that someone will correct me if I'm wrong or if they disagree.

One has to wonder why indeed this gets no resolution. If this was a man I wonder if we would still be wondering.
As for that 10 year old girl... I will bet you lunch that if/when they find her killer that he has been arrested as a sex offender that was let off the hook as they always are. The Sandusky's are coming out of the woodwork right now. Let the pot smokers out of jail and put the pedophiles in and throw away the key!!!!!
Did they police take her computers?
There was an early rumor of a break-in at her husband's law office on the Sunday night she disappeared - May 23, 2010. Supposedly the eldest son slept in the office for several nights to deter thieves, if they returned.
Funny thing, though. The McHenry (Ill.) Police (City police) have no report of a burglary. The rumor was that either the computers were taken or the hard drives. Just guess what could have been on Beth's computer at work. Besides all the Farmville game-playing, I mean, and Facebook comments.
Never heard a word about any personal computer she might have used.
And camera? Supposedly, one member of the "Posse" had her camera. Think it got to the police? What pictures were on the phone?
