This week a student here on a visa from another country was picked up by our super immigration folks. He had been attending a community college and apparently ran short of money for the current semester. The college reported a change in status to the immigration folks and an officer showed up at his door yesterday and nabbed him.
Now, I'm all for collaring terrorists before they can bomb a building in the Loop. I'm not a fan of the thousands - nay, tens of thousands - of people who sneak into the U.S. and then fly under the radar.
I suspect that the officer could have verified the circumstances of his not enrolling this semester and set out some conditions for him to regain compliance with his visa or to leave the country. All without taking him into custody and without jailing him.
Instead, they grab him and he is housed in the "McHenry County Immigration Hotel" in Woodstock, about 65 miles from where he was living.
Now the immigration wing will earn $90/day for 14 days or more while all this is "investigated."
Do we have a Federal government that is running out of control? What impact does arrest and jail have on a visitor to the U.S.? We scream bloody murder when a U.S. citizen is jailed in another country. Who sticks up for those caught up in situations like this?
