Trademark infringement in Algonquin

Take a look at the photo in this morning's Northwest Herald on Page D1. Is Starbucks opening a dog park in Algonquin? That's what I thought.

No, a mom-and-pop business (maybe, without the pop) opened a doggie daycare and called it Starbarks Dog Daycare. And now Starbucks is all over them like flies on coffee grounds.

And it should be.

The Algonquin business asks for opinions on its Facebook page. Go to Facebook and search for "Starbarks Algonquin" and toss in your two-cents' worth.

If you are a videogame pirate or steal songs off the internet, you'll probably think it's no big deal.

If you respect trademark and copyright law (intellectual property), you may think that, indeed, it is a very big deal.

I don't know. Intellectual property is sort of fuzzy. How come Starbucks can tell Starbarks they can't use a green oval with white font and stars? Nobody can use something similar to that now? Starbarks isn't ripping them off. They're paying homage to them. Yes, it helps out Starbarks, but it also gives attention to Starbucks. It's acknowledging Starbucks as a successful company. By them being lawsuit happy it's really making Starbucks look like a bunch of money grubbing, attention seeking, insecure, narcissistic, opportunistic lowlifes.

If the intellectual property laws of today had been in place for the entirety of our country (as opposed to the last few decades) our country wouldn't be nearly as innovative as it is (in terms of pop culture, music, art, etc).

I'll concede one thing to you. The right thing to do would have been to go to Starbucks because this was obviously a tribute/imitation/rip off (whatever your opinion) of Starbucks' logo. I swear people ask for trouble when they do stuff like this.

I think Starbucks should just have some decaf and chill out a bit.
