Political Shenanigans

A friend called me about a defaced campaign sign near Huntley and, sure enough, look what happened.

Now, let's see. Who would do such a thing? They must be really worried. And well they should be.

There are only three candidates in the race for sheriff of McHenry County. I think it's safe to rule out my supporters; they would not have defaced one of my signs. So that leaves the other two.

In the weeds near my sign laid one of Mike Mahon's campaign signs. It had been torn from the metal stand and thrown in the weeds. I think it's safe to say that Mike didn't trash him own sign, and I'm sure that his supporters didn't trash mine. In fact, I called Mike to let know of the vandalism to his sign.
That leaves the supporters of only one candidate. Now, I'm pretty sure that Keith didn't drive that white Tahoe, which was his ride to the Northwest Herald interview last Monday, to Huntley and risk getting caught trashing either of these signs. I wish I could say the same for his supporters - those who are desperate to keep him in office and keep the gravy train flowing at the sheriff's department.
If you see anyone tampering with any political signs, report them to the nearest law enforcement agency. Get a plate number and description of the vehicle, as well as the people nearby.
Now, if you see Keith's signs being tampered with, do not call him at his office. We'd all hate for the County Board to spend $100,000 to hire Mr. Tonigan to investigate Keith for political activity on County time. Tonigan might start with Keith's time at the Northwest Herald last Monday at 11:00AM and have to dig for a time slip that indicated that Keith took personal time for that interview.
Did Keith reimburse the County for vehicle expense to drive there and back? There are those who think that white Tahoe (of Jewel-Osco parking lot fame, too) is County-owned and County-maintained, even though it is apparently registered in a dummy name to avoid a direct law-enforcement connection.

You do understand that an elected official doesn't punch a time clock, don't you? They aren't even required to come to work - all they are responsible to do is make sure that their office does what it is supposed to do. Get it? You and I can argue whether or not that is right or wrong but the simple fact is that that's the way it is - legally. You seem to have a very strong opinion as to what is right, what is wrong and what you like and do not like and a not so good concept of what is required or permitted under the law. Just another reason I don't think you'd make such a good sheriff - ah, but there are so many reasons to think that!

As for the shenanigans... Looks like a paint ball splatter from the picture doesn't it? Lots of that crap going on. I suppose a paranoid IDOT would figure that "they" are out to get them too when a road sign is defaced, damaged or stolen. That you think you have ANYBODY worried is just too funny for words. Reminds me of the very old joke about egos. The most egotistical creature in the world? A flea floating down the Chicago River on a matchbox crying out "Raise the drawbridge, I have a hard...!"

We're going to miss your idiocy, Gus. We really are.

It might look to you, from your seat in front of your computer, like a paintball splatter, but it's not.

Rest easy, Just. Win or lose, I'll still be here.

Unlike Keith, who will probably be moving south soon. Maybe the Daily Herald will explore his plans to serve a full term, if he is re-elected (assuming he is not ruled ineligible to run).

I think it was someone who hates misspelled words. Or someone who knew the sign was put up earlier than allowed by law.

Wow, I've been cloned! Another Just has appeared on the Blog. While I agree with my copycat “Just” I think a point needs to be made.

Nygren is a SALARIED employee not an hourly employee. He is under no obligation to divide his time between his NWH interview and his MCSO administrative time.

BTW my copycat Just, should I be watching for a big orange IDOT truck patrolling for these miscreants? Remember there is only one letter differing IDIOT and IDOT or are they one and the same? OH WAIT, maybe Nygren moonlights in a big orange truck patrolling, trying to sneak up on Gus in the Jewel parking while getting a State pension too.

According to the McHenry County Planning Department, there is no set period before an election that one can place signs.

If you want to announce for 2015, then you can put up signs now.

Pretty stupid omission; right?

The following comment was received from a police officer:

"I read your post about sign vandalism. Just for your information, that is paint that is commonly used and located in squad cars to mark pavement in traffic crash investigations. My guess it was a patrol officer of some kind. It appears to be the same color and is stored in spray can form."

And it's only available to law enforcement personnel, right? Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you.

That paint is available to anyone. Primarily it is the paint that is used by utilities to mark underground lines, used by construction companies to mark roads or property for excavation, used by bike clubs to mark pavement during cross country rallies. Survey crews use it. IDOT uses it so maybe JUST is correct that maybe it was a big orange truck...

Personally I think it was a school teacher correcting the spelling of SheRRiff.

HUH? I would think that “having a very strong opinion as to what is right, what is wrong” would be an absolutely requisite attitude for any law enforcement position, PARTICULARLY for a sheriff! Nygren and his supporters have demonstrated the only strong opinions they have are whatever they want them to be. That is not lawful conduct, those are the seeds of totalitarianism.

Having been a precinct captain, poll watcher, and election judge for over 35 years, I am appalled by what passes for political involvement. As much as I’ve been concerned about particular races in the past, as much as I have believed that various challengers in opposition to my preferred candidate were dangerous and inimical to the populace’s and freedoms’ best interests, I have NEVER defaced or removed a sign. NEVER.

Feeling you must do so simply demonstrates that you have no logical argument to offer against you opponents. You have nothing left other than the simple expedient of brute force, nothing more. And in exercising this brute force, particularly against signs and other passive campaigning tools, you are hardly embodying any sort of personal threat, you are only demonstrating personal COWARDICE.
