Using attempted embarrassment, harassment and intimidation in the workplace is never a good idea, and it's even worse when it is tolerated by supervisors and managers. One would think that they would quickly nip any of that nonsense in the bud and make it very clear to all that it is not to happen.
A person's political views are his own business. Anyone is free to choose what political party he prefers and to work on anyone's political campaign, or even just attend a fundraiser if he or she wishes to. An employee of, say, a sheriff's department should never have to give a second thought to whether it's "smart" to attend a fundraiser for an opponent of the incumbent sheriff.
Before the February 2nd primary election, I was aware of the support from numerous employees at the sheriff's department for Zane Seipler. I wasn't really surprised that more MCSD employees didn't show up at Zane's fundraiser on the Square, because I realized that word would quickly get back to supervisory and administrative personnel at MCSD, and then their lives would be "hell".
Photographs of certain MCSD employees who attended one of Mike Mahon's fundraisers were circulated through the sheriff's department within the past two weeks. They were put up, taken down and put up again.
If I am elected Sheriff of McHenry County, deputies will be free to follow their political interests, and there will be NO harassment or intimidation. What they do on their own time is up to them. I've already stated publicly that I will be a one-term sheriff, and there won't be any re-election campaign for them to stay clear of. All they will need to do is be aware of laws related to political activities in the workplace and on County property and follow them.
The current sheriff should knock some heads at the department and make darned sure that the nonsense of the last two weeks does not recur. It's a rich topic for yet one more lawsuit against the Sheriff. How easy it would be to duck that one.
