Kwame Raoul tries to rule

Sen. Kwame Raoul
Illinois Senator Kwame Raoul (D-13) ) is about to throw a ringer at his fellow Senators. Go to www.ilga.gov and take a look at HB0183. You'll see it's a shell bill for pertaining to electronic transfers and that it removes "... the requirement for a person operating a terminal to disclose surcharges for usage of the terminal by a sign on the terminal."

Kind of sounds like something that the Illinois General Assembly would consider and pass, doesn't it?

That is a House bill, sponsored by Rep. Lou Lang. Notice that Kwame Raoul is the Senate sponsor. But wait!

Click on Senate Amendment 1, and read what Sen. Raoul has done to trash the original bill and change its entire purpose to a Chicago-style concealed carry bill.

What is "Chicago-style" about it? He is willing to let the State Police issue concealed carry licenses, but they are no good in Chicago without an endorsement of qualification issued by the Chicago Police Superintendent.

Further, he wants to stick it to applicants through a $100 non-refundable application fee, plus $50 non-refundable fee for the City of Chicago. Notice the "non-refundable" parts!

How many months or years would it take Garry McCarthy to plow through tens of thousands of applications? And would he stick his neck out by approving even one? He certainly won't know most of the applicants.

So Raoul is setting up the slot machines to cough out $50 to the City of Chicago, whether or not McCarthy thinks a law-abiding person in Chicago ought to have a license for a gun, so he can protect himself outside his home.

I haven't got the stomach to try to reach the rest of HB0183. Gotta tell you, though. That Kwame Raoul guy is a piece of work. I'll have to go meet him one of these days. His District office is at 1509 E. 53rd Street, 2nd Floor, Chicago. On second thought, maybe I won't go to his office.

I could toward (only) his office with my weapon (for self-defense purposes only) in my "container". And certainly not by 'L' and bus. By car, maybe. And then I'd have to invite him out to the curb, because carrying a gun into his office would certainly violate a law. And I wouldn't want to be seen, taking it off my belt and locking in my car. Not in that neighborhood!

Illinois must end up with one law State-wide. Take Supt. McCarthy out of the loop, and make the one law for the entire State. No carve-out for Chicago.

Your comments about that neighborhood and the implication that Raoul's office is in a dangerous area are completely inappropriate and ignorant. While, I'm sure, the TWO health food stores, UPS store, mattress mart, and Chinese restaurant on the block attract a lot of unsavory people, they guy who can be seen (on google maps) rollerblading down the well-maintained street does not seem to fear for his safety. Might it be time to wander outside Woodstock a little before taking shots at where other people live (and, by "other people" in this particular instance, we're talking about some of the smartest and brightest college students in the nation).

I'm wondering how many shootings have happened in broad daylight in front of that office since there was that shooting on the Woodstock square in broad daylight. I'm guessing it's none. Advantage: Not Woodstock.

Here's an idea, Gus. If you want to persuade people that a certain flavor of concealed carry bill should pass, try being credible and basing your opinion in actual facts (as in ones that are verifiable to others). This post makes it look like you're just trying to scare people. And, well, if we start making decisions based on fear the terrorists win, don't they. We don't want the terrorists to win now, do we?

Haiduk, people are scared already. Nothing I do will increase their fear.

I lived at 76th & Yates when I was a graduate student at the University of Chicago. OK, so that was 45 years ago. No way I'd drive through the neighborhood now, alone and unarmed. And "armed" would me some good, only if I saw the shooter first.

How about if you head down to Kwame's neighborhood Saturday afternoon and evening and take a few pictures. Be sure to park for 30 minutes or so. Leave the windows down. Oh, and take your family along, too. Email the photos to me; I'll post them.

Is your life insurance paid up?

Ah. I got it now. Nearly a half a century ago, you lived in a completely different neighborhood, so this one has to be scary. It's all coming together.

I'll do better than go down there one Saturday and take pictures. I'll tell you that I was in that very same neighborhood for the entire day last Saturday at the bike races. I regret to inform you that neither myself, my girlfriend, nor my dog were put in harm's way. Perhaps all the neighborhood rabble-rousers were frightened away (the U of C Women's rugby team was practicing out there, and some of them did look tough). I even parked on the street and didn't get killed. Crazy times.

I'd like to head back tomorrow and confirm that the area is just as safe as it was last week, but I'm going to be in another very dangerous place- Elgin. Hopefully I don't die.

If I get a chance to make it to Hyde Park in the next few weeks (to take you a picture), would you prefer I take it in front of the Starbucks or the GNC?

Of course none of this has anything to do with your original point. But, I suppose that's my point. Nobody is going to remember you telling us that ANOTHER soon-to-be-failed gun control bill was introduced. Rather people are going to remember that your xenophobia lead you to take cheap-shots at an otherwise safe part of Hyde Park.
