Lowery to Crystal Lake P.D.?

When last Wednesday's regularly-scheduled monthly meeting of the McHenry County Sheriff's Department Merit Commission was canceled, I lost the opportunity to ask an important question during the Public Participation comment period.

I had printed out the meeting agenda (as of 2/4/2010) and had made some notes. I was curious as to whether there is an Eligibility List for the Undersheriff's position, because I had read of a rumor that Undersheriff Gene Lowery had applied for a job at the Crystal Lake Police Department. Should he leave the Sheriff's Department, I wondered whether the Sheriff would seek an outsider for the Undersheriff's opening or if he would promote from within. And if from within, would he have to move a Captain up or would he pick the best qualified person for the job.

It seems to me that the only likely job at the Crystal Lake Police Department would be that of the Deputy Chief, since Dennis Harris recently retired after 27 years. (I think it was 27 years; I tried to check on www.nwherald.com but they have gotten really stingy about news more than a week old and want to charge $2.95 to show me that article.) Why would the Undersheriff leave the County to join a municipal department? Is Chief Linder soon to follow Dennis Harris into retirement?

What do officers at the Crystal Lake Police Department think about an outsider's being hired into the Number 2 position? Many officers there have probably worked hard to move up through the ranks and to get prepared for a Number 2, and eventually the Number 1, spot.

Should the Crystal Lake P.D. hire Gene Lowery as Deputy Chief? Or has it already offered the position? And has he accepted it?

And what about the Eligibility Lists for Sergeant and Lieutenant at the Sheriff's Department? The agenda for the February 10th Merit Commission meeting had two items of "Old Business": Extensions for the Eligibility Lists for both ranks. Have both lists now expired? Does this mean there is no one eligible to promote?

Once Lowery is out from under the thumb of the "Ogre" he can tell everyone how often Nygren is really at work.

Very often UPPER police management positions are sought out and brought in from the outside. They bring new blood, new ideas, disregard preconceived biases that others within the agency may have. CLPD advertized in National police management magazines for the position.

US Lowery has been at the MCSO for many years and is more than qualified to be the Chief at any town. I hope the best for him.

Unlike the opinions of some posters to this blog, I think Gene Lowery is a very intelligent and qualified leader.

Lowery is one of the biggest problems in the MCSO. He wormed his way to the top by being the sneekiest butt kisser of them all. He is an embarrassment for every hard working cop. He is a half wit that put an innocent man on death row even when he knew that all the facts didn't add up. He has no morals. Cops like NotAWannaBe and Lowery make me sick. It's all about the stats. When it should be about serving and protecting.

I wish he'd just leave the county all together. He can't. No one outside of this corrupt county would hire him. All he brings is baggage. I'm sure the Crystal Lake rank and file aren't too happy.

NotAWannaBe should go with him. Leaving MCSO would make it better place and he can learn to better his butt kissing skills. He's well on his way to UPPER management.
