All State offices closed?

This morning I called Sen. Pam Althoff's offices in Springfield and Crystal Lake to ask her help in breaking loose a larger amount of the $1,000,000 grant to Woodstock School District 200 than the 6.8% ($68,000) D200 thinks it is going to receive for its 2010 pre-school program. (Harvard scarfed up 85.6% of its requested grant.)

Sen. Althoff's Springfield office phone was answered electronically, and the message indicated that Cheryl is out of the office and will call back; so I called the Crystal Lake office, where a voicemail announcement informed me that the office is closed today and Monday for presidents' holidays.

It's nice to know that state employees get two days off, presumably with pay, at a time when the State of Illinois must be rapidly approaching bankruptcy. State of Illinois offices will be closed for FIFTEEN (15!) holidays in 2010. To see the list, search for "Illinois state holidays".

Kind of makes you sick, doesn't it?

Crystal Lake Grade School students also had both days off.

These days I wonder if students even know what the holiday is for. For example, do you think even one student does any research (even a Google search) for the person whose birthday is honored by a holiday (Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr.)?
