Feed people, but not the bears

I love this message that is makes the rounds:

"The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever, to 46 million people.

"Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us 'Please Do Not Feed the Animals.' Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Umm, no. The reason that you don't feed the animals is not because they will not learn to feed themselves ... the reason is that you don't want them to be close to people who they might accidently kill.

But, great right-wing journalism has never been stopped by the facts.

Just ask yourself this ... when has anyone anywhere at anytime had to "teach" a wild animal to take care of itself. They haven't these things come pre-programmed.
