Do NOT lower the Flags

Dec. 24, 2013 (This will be published on Dec. 30)

When is someone going to rattle Gov. Quinn's cage enough to instill a little common sense. Just a little; that's all I ask.

Just got a message that the guv has ordered the lowering of the U.S. and Illinois Flags because of the death of the Cook County Sheriff's investigator, Cuauhtemoc Estrada.

I was deeply saddened by his death. He was shot and killed outside a VFW Hall in Bellwood on Friday night, December 20, after he saw that his daughter and her boyfreiend were being robbed.

He was off-duty. Governor, off-duty. It was not a line-of-duty death.

This is the guv's attempt to ram gun violence down everyone's throats by lowering the United States and Illinois flags unnecessarily and improperly.

If you would like to join me in protesting improper lowering of the U.S. and Illinois Flags, call Gov. Quinn at 217.782.0244 or email him at pat.quinn@illinois.gov

Or, if you really want to waste your time and have your comment disappear into a Black hole, go to http://www2.illinois.gov/gov/Pages/ContacttheGovernor.aspx and dump your comment into the guv's "bucket", where it might get counted before it is ignored.

The off-duty was performing a civic duty in trying to defend against a robbery. It was an honorable death, worthy of 1/2 staff IL flag. Other no-talent celebs/athletes who croak from drugs or overindulgence do not deserve that honor... nor would I even drop my pants to half-staff! Doh.
But in this case, I'd lower it.

Not a big deal but give the man his honor. Actually this deputy will be designated as on duty. I am sure that because he was heard to announce his office he will be afforded full on duty benefits. To clarify,
he was actually a jailer assigned to Tom Darts personal security detail, hence the investigator designation. He was not a Sheriffs Police Officer, the police division of the Cook Cty Sheriff. It is sad when anyone in law enforcement / fire service is killed regardless of assignment. Each should be honored equally. I do not quarrel with a display of respect but honestly other officers killed do not get this honor because they are not close to Sheriff Tom Dart or Gov. Quinn.

Gus, Justin is right. Once he takes Police action he's on duty. If I am out with my wife eating dinner and I take action when I see a crime and get hurt, it becomes an IOD injury.

Big Daddy, hope you don't work for Woodstock PD, where you can get injured on duty, in uniform, arriving in a squad car, assigned by dispatch, and then have the Woodstock Police Pension Board deem it as not IOD.
