Thank a cop today

Today, September 15th, is National Thank a Police Officer Day.

On the image of this poster that is posted on Facebook is a John F. Kennedy quote above his name, "We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives."

Saying "Thanks" is a serious business and too often overlooked. Being a cop or deputy or trooper is not just writing tickets and going to court. It is too often deadly business and by surprise.

Officers must be on their toes at all times. There is no such thing as a "routine" traffic stop. The next time you get stopped, be polite. Keep your hands in sight. Don't move without telling the officer what you want to do and asking if that's okay.

If your driver's license is in his hip pocket or your purse or the glove compartment, tell the officer where it is and ask if you can reach for it. If it's at night, turn on the dome light as you stop and keep your hands on top of the steering wheel; hands open, fingers outstretched, so the officer can see you aren't holding anything.

In Illinois, law-abiding citizens don't have to tell the officer that they are armed, because they won't be. If you get stopped out-of-state while you are carrying concealed, know that State's laws. When the officer approaches, I suggest telling him (or her) that you have a concealed carry permit and that you are carrying legally. Have your hands on the top of the steering wheel when you say this. The officer will tell you how he wants you to reach for your driver's license.

If you don't know the laws of the state through which you are traveling, I highly recommend that you not carry concealed. Thinking you know the law won't be good enough.
