Over the past several weeks I have watched the U.S. Flag on the flagpole in front of KHC Corporation, 333 East Judd Street, Woodstock, disintegrate. Each time I passed, I wondered whether those who work there noticed that the flag was shredding at the edge away from the pole.
This morning I noticed the two holes in the stars area of the flag. (To enlarge the photo, click on it; then click on the Back button on your browser.)
The United States Flag Code provides a standard for proper display of the U.S. Flag, and it provides directions for the destruction of a flag when it is worn and to be removed from service. A flag such as this one can be delivered to the American Legion post here in Woodstock, where it will be destroyed in accordance with a ceremony of honor.
Flags don't seem to last very long, and no doubt that they are expensive to replace. Are they even made in the United States?
Perhaps no employees, owners or customers of KHC Corporation ever enter by its front door on Judd. Maybe, if they get a few gentle, polite reminders this week, they will remove the flag and replace it with a new one. The phone number for KHC is (815) 337-7630.
