On July 8th the author of a fairly new Facebook page about Beth Bentley, missing since May 2010, wrote a long piece, asking who is responsible. Read this page and the many comments. The Facebook page is called "Mystery of Beth Bentley Missing".
The question has two prongs: the longer this goes, the more likely it is that someone is responsible for her being missing; in other words, she is NOT "missing". She didn't just walk away from sons, husband, job, friends and willingly disappear into the night.
The second prong is those responsible for finding her. Who would those be?
The family.
The local police department. She was reported missing on May 24, 2010 to the Woodstock Police Department and it has claimed to be the lead investigating law enforcement agency.
The author of the Facebook page asks why the office of the McHenry County State's Attorney (SAO) isn't involved.
The FBI?
OK, let's start with the third - the SAO might only get involved upon request of the Woodstock Police Department (WPD). Somebody correct me, if I'm wrong here. Wouldn't the WPD have to suspect that a crime has occurred here and then have a suspect, in order to get the SAO involved? Would the SAO have any legal basis for getting involved without a suspect to be charged?
The WPD has claimed that it is hard to investigate a case when 300+ miles separate it from the location from which Beth might have disappeared. Those locations? Centralia, Ill. and Mount Vernon, Ill. But I say "might", because there just might not be any proof that Beth was ever there. There are law enforcement agencies there (Mount Vernon P.D., Centralia P.D., Jefferson County Sheriff's Department) with capable detectives to investigate whether Beth ever really was in southern Illinois on the week-end of May 21-23, 2010.
On Friday I posted this comment: "It's important to remember where the pressure must come from to force the Woodstock P.D. to report to the public. It will not do so, just because the public cries out for answers. The officers and detectives work for the Chief of Police. The Chief is appointed by the City Manager. The City Manager is appointed by the Mayor, with the consent of the City Council. Until the Mayor tells the City Manager to tell the Police Chief to open it, it's not going to happen."
Is this still "just" a missing-person case? With every week that passes, it becomes harder to accept that. Have the police investigated, in depth, every relationship that Beth had - with husband, with children, with friends, with "friends", with former spouses? with co-workers? with clients of her employer?
Can the FBI only get involved at the request of Woodstock PD? If so, is their justification to request the FBI's involvement? If so, why isn't the FBI's assistance being requested?
What is the involvement of the Illinois State Police? Any? A few months ago, wasn't there a statement from the Woodstock PD that help was being sought from the State Police? Wasn't the detective district from the Mount Vernon area mentioned by ISP Number?

Thank you for continuing to keep this case in the public eye (or as much as this blog allows you to do so). Not only is it as if she vanished, but also as if she never mattered.
