Warrants team picks up 14

On Monday and Tuesday officers and deputies of three law enforcement agencies joined together in what the Northwest Herald called a "sweep" that led to 14 arrests. I heard about it yesterday afternoon, and details of one particular attempted service of a warrant will be reported in detail next week.

According to Deputy Chief John Jones of the McHenry Police Department (as reported in this morning's Northwest Herald), officers and deputies of that department, the McHenry County Sheriff's Department and the Lake County Sheriff's Department banded together "to arrest those individuals that have been able to avoid apprehension." Examples of the charges on which the warrants were based are driving with a suspended license, failure to pay child support and retail theft.

No warrants on murder charges, domestic battery, bank robbery, drunk driving, drug dealing, terrorism.

When you learn the details of the call I received yesterday, I suspect you will be as outraged as I was and am. Should heads roll? Will they?

I'll always remember the story on 60 Minutes years ago about the Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer who flew his seaplane to a remote island to arrest a man who was wanted. He landed, tied up his plane, walked to the guy's house and told him that he had to take him in. They walked to the plane. As I recall, he didn't even handcuff him. Such was the respect of people, even criminals, for the RCMP.

Have law enforcement officers around here earned that kind of respect? Not when you read about too many of our local deputies and cops.

I'll find out what the charges were for the 30 warrants and who the officers/deputies were who went out to play on Monday and Tuesday. Watch for this information and also details of one attempted pick-up yesterday.
