The Citizens Utility Board (CUB), Illinois’ premier utility watchdog group, is holding a free phone-bill clinic at the Woodstock Public Library. Bring your phone bill!
Our experts will sit with you one-on-one and provide money-saving tips, including how to get a $20 credit on your long-distance bill. Last year, we showed consumers how to cut their annual calling costs by an average of $200!
Concerned about your wireless bill? We’ll also provide the latest on CUB’s Cellphone Saver, a free online tool that is showing consumers how to save hundreds on their wireless bills.

Do you know a senior citizen who is still leasing his phone from AT&T. Yes! There are still some who are doing that.
Do you know a senior citizen or disabled person who seldom uses his phone and who would like to cut his phone bill sharply by taking advantage of little-known, low, special rates?
Know anyone who is still pay $.07-.10/min. for long-distance or paying a monthly minimum?
The phone companies count on customers who just get stuck in the routine and get used to paying - and paying and paying. Take advantage of this free clinic. And then, how about commenting here on how much you save because of the clinic.

Just to clarify--your AT&T bill may charge you for three services (if you also get DSL or dialup from AT&T): (1) local calls; (2) local toll calls, in-state long distance, and interstate long distance; and (3) your Internet connection.
(1) We switched from an AT&T plan and dropped Linebacker to get AT&T's Consumer's Choice Plus (which includes voice mail and caller ID). That saved us $15/month. CUB designed three Consumer's Choice plans for local calls that AT&T MUST offer. Check with CUB first about the specifics. Your AT&T rep may be "misinformed" about the features; ours was.
(2) We dropped AT&T's Just Call 300 to get Pioneer Telephone's service for local toll, in-state long distance, and interstate long distance. With Just Call 300, we were paying 7 cents/minute for 300 minutes ($20/month), then 9 cents/minute. Now we pay 2-3 cents/minute. Pioneer Telephone's service has been just fine.
Understand the components of your bill. Study the CUB material on the website, or call CUB. Then cut your costs.
If you really want to save big bucks and you have a computer with Internet service look into Vonage.com and you will see a bill of about $20.00 per month (if you prepay for 12 months) with unlimited calling in the US and only pennies per minute to most other countries. Check it out! It is very reliable and has 911 service.
Vonage offers free international calling to the U.K., Italy, France, Spain and Ireland. And 1 cent/minute calling to Mexico City, Buenos Aires. Sydney (Australia), China, Sweden. Canada may still be included in the basic U.S. package; ask Vonage. Check first if you are calling a cell phone in those countries.
Vonage was even a better deal until the landline companies got their mitts on the necks of the Feds and insisted on taxes.
