Gov. Blagojevich is seeking $40,000,000 in emergency state money to raze Cole Hall on the NIU campus. What do you think of tearing down this building and building a new hall on the NIU campus?
First of all, there is no “emergency.” Is anyone else sick and tired of politicians and bureaucrats crying wolf and insisting on immediate action by labeling a funding request as an “emergency”?
Cole Hall should remain in use on the NIU campus. No knee-jerk reaction, tugging on peoples’ heartstrings and emotions, should be the reason for a decision to replace a sound building on a public campus.
A plaque in a common hallway could be mounted in memory of the five students who were killed and in respect to those students who were injured. The others who were traumatized by the event should not be overlooked.
But to demolish the building?
Illinois residents must contact their legislators and the governor’s office immediately to voice their disapproval.
If you are in favor of tearing down this building, just make out your check for $10,000 and mail it to NIU President John Peters.

I say we let Blago crash his little plane into it, we can take care of two problem at once!
I agree. I am horrified at the wastefulness of spending so much senseless money. I understand that a tragedy occured in that building. I feel deeply for all the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and were injured, but it just doesn't make sense to destroy a perfectly good large structure because of it. Virginia Tech didn't destroy their building, but is now using the space were their shootings occured in a different way. They have dedicated that portion of the building to educating about peace. They are continuing to use the rest of the building as it was before.
I am going to sound harsh saying this, but I really think that the people in power at the University are using this as an excuse to get a new facility, at taxpayer expense.
As I said before, I feel deeply for all of the NIU community. It just doesn't make sense to tear down the building. Change it- redesign that floor, whatever they need to do. There is no way that the cost would be even close to the 40 million quote.
gus should take a plane trip with blago so then we would get rid of another problem.
