Circuit Clerk employees: be thankful

Circuit Clerk employees are beating up on the County Board for pay raises. What's the hammer? Could they shut down the courts with a strike?

Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 515 represents 60 employees and complains they haven't had a raise since 2009.

Well, folks, maybe they should be grateful that they even have jobs!

But did the County Board take a pay cut? Did deputies or jailers take a cut? How about Court Security? Anybody there take a pay cut? Did any elected official take a pay cut? Remember when that was an issue in the Sheriff's race in 2010?

One of these days County taxpayers are going to scream, "Enough!" What if every property owner appealed his assessment? What if every voter voted out the "tax and spend" crowd?

How can anyone afford to live in McHenry County? Look at your tax bill! Sure, it doesn't hurt, because your property taxes are most likely part of your mortgage payment (PITI). Then at tax time, the bank merely shuffles your money into the county coffers.

Look at your tax bill. Ask yourself, "Can I do with less?" Then turn off that TV and start showing up at School Board meetings, City Council meetings, Township meetings, County Board meetings.

Maybe taxpayers need a union!!!

You old fool. Do YOU have a TAX BILL.... apartment dweller?

My tax bill arrived and nearly 69% goes to the school district. Less than 10% goes to McHenry County which pays for the Clerks, Highway Treasure Building Inspectors, Health Sheriff Jail and all County functions.

Did you read the article? At the END of the contract the starting pay will be $12.25 and top will be $18.60. This is hardly high wage
employment.

Just because teachers are raking in 6 figure salaries and school boards cave into excessive contracts does not mean ALL public employees are highly paid.

$!2.00 per hour? My son was making that much working at a retail store while in High School. Under this contract they won’t make that until 2014.

Apartment renters do, of course, pay property taxes. They are part of my rent. Where do you think the building owner gets the money with which to pay the property tax bill?

But you know that. Or you should. Even if you don't care to admit it.

Do you have a clue? The County does not keep the money, it collects the money and distributes it to the numerous taxing bodies such as the city, township, schools, college, township road districts conservation district. There are others but I made my point. Schools get the lions share at somewhere around 70-75% depending if you live in the city limits or out in the county. The county portion has always been less than 10%. They get road funds from highway fuel tax and then some of the sales tax.

I own property in two states. In one state the property taxes are low but the sales tax is high and plates for the car are based upon the age and value of the car. Plates are $700 for the vehicle I keep there. Traffic ticket minimum fine is $190.00 if you pay at the court window. Twice that if you go to court and are found guilty.

My point to you Gus is that you blame the clerk employee making less than 12 bucks an hour for the high property taxes. Point blame where it belongs and that is the school districts.

Yes the building owner pays taxes and rent must cover overhead but do you see the tax bill you bitch about? Are you intimately aware of the individual listing of how much money goes to each taxing district? The tax bill breaks it down for the taxpayer.

If we had some legislators with real balls, they would pass legislation that excludes the SCHOOLS portion of the taxes for people eligible for Social Security and do not have children in school. I'd go so far as say if they had paid taxes in the district for 10 or more years and no kids, exclude them. My parents paid $5,000 a year on an 80 year old house. When he was widowed he wore a sweater and kept the heat way down and turned off all the lights to save money. He lived on a meager pension and social security. They lived in the house for nearly 50 years and property taxes took up a majority of his income. Why should he have to pay SCHOOLS taxes when his kids had left school over 30 years before?

How about the APARTMENT dweller with 6 or more kids? Maybe pay a head tax per kid. How about three families of immigrants living together in one house? Numerous kids using the schools and ONE tax payment made by the building or homeowner.

Part time bus drivers making somewhere around $17.00 per hour to start and you bitch about a $12.00 clerk?

Come on, apples to apples, please.

Compare the $12.00/hour starting pay for a clerk to the starting pay for a business driver? Might be very close to the same.

The bus driver probably works a split shift, perhaps arriving at work at 6:00AM to inspect the bus and hit the road for the first pick-up; going home at 9-9:30AM and coming back at 1:30-2:00PM.

The clerk doesn't have to put up with blaring iPods, cursing, spit balls, etc.

More importantly, ask what clerks (still, clerks) earn after 5-10-15 years.

You ask "More importantly, ask what clerks (still, clerks) earn after 5-10-15 years."

According the the NWH, at the end of the contract in 2014 it will be $18.60. Printed in Black and White. Do you have a case of selective reading or just poor comprehension?

Starting pay for a PT bus driver is somewhere north of $17.00. You can work a morning, noontime or afternoon route or a little of both.
