Have you noticed all the illegal signs in the right-of-way on U.S. 14 in both directions from Lake Avenue?
The new Kohl's in Woodstock is relying on paper and wire-frame advertising signs along the highway shoulder to attract attention to its new store. As locals know, drivers must proceed south on Lake Avenue from the light on U.S. 14, in order to find their way to Kohl's.
IDOT rules and regulations prohibit these types of signs along highways. Period.
But local IDOT folks had a conversation with a Kohl's manager, and the manager said she'd take down the signs in a few weeks. Sorry, but No Pass.
Will every business in Woodstock now run out and get signs to plant in the right-of-way? Why not? It's cheap advertising. If IDOT will leave the signs up for Kohl's, how could they take down realtors' signs, oil change and car wash signs, or signs for any other retailer? Or for any service business, for that matter.
It's tax time. Will the "Statue of Liberty" show up on U.S. 14? How about advertising signs for CPAs, lawyers and banks, and insurance agents and financial planners?
Or for hypnotherapists? Maybe this one...
"SPIRITS CLEANED OUT OF HOUSES AND PERSONS. CALL NOW."
Or
"PAST-LIFE REGRESSIONS. A SCENIC TOUR OF YOUR LIFE (LIVES)."
Coming to your right-of-way soon...

Perhaps you should focus on all the politicians' signs still stuck at nearly every street corner.
The businesses are just trying to drum up business for themselves and to keep people employed.
I dont like signs either... I think theyr're tacky, but if the sign-owners put'm up and take'm down in a reasonable amount of time, I can live with it. Doh.
If signs are to be permitted, then the laws should be changed to allow them. And then those laws followed.
Thanks for commenting.
