What public bodies say the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of their meetings?
Woodstock District 200 Board meetings? They do.
Woodstock City Council? They don't.
Who else does? Or doesn't?
Two judges at the McHenry County Circuit Court do (or have in the past). I haven't been in as many courtrooms recently as in the past. Any others?
Watch Red Skelton (1913-1997) and listen to his words. This is believed to have been recorded in 1969. Red Skelton remembers Mr. Laswell, one of his teachers and principal of Harrison School in Vincennes, Indiana.
Next time you are reciting the Pledge, don't just "recite" it. Take the words into your heart as you speak them. When you pass our flag, think of these words.
And, especially when the U.S. Flag is at half-staff for a military death or a line-of-duty death of a law enforcement officer or firefighter, pause - even stop - and think about the meaning of the lowered flag.
